“Success is most often achieved by those who don’t know that failure is inevitable.” - Coco Chanel
This quote said by Coco Chanel embraces the way I perceive my life around fashion. Since I was thirteen years old, fashion has consistently been apart of my life. I will never forget the first time i designed and created my first dress. A black pleated mini dress with a lace bow wrapped around my waist for my eighth grade dinner dance. With weeks of learning how to sew from my neighbor, I have never felt more accomplished realizing that I am good at something and fashion is where I belong. My room, filled with magazine cutouts of models strutting down the runway, high end editorials, and shoes from Balenciaga to Christian Louboutin plastered on my walls. Realizing that I have a natural talent and an eye for fashion, The Fashion Institute of Technology is literally the only place that my heart is set on.
Throughout high school, I continued to sew and create gorgeous outfits for myself. I started off small and began my first job as a sales associate at a store called Delia’s at my local shopping mall. I had responsibilities such as working the cash register, dressing mannequins, tending to every customer’s needs, and organizing the clothes. Experiencing this truly gave me a glimpse into the fashion business, intriguing me to expand my horizons on the business of fashion.
During those four years of school I began to volunteer at fashion events in the city. I became very close friends with a girl that helped me obtain an internship at the Victoria's Secret flagship store in Soho last year to gain more experience. I performed tasks that I already have done while at Delia’s, but at a faster pace and with different obstacles this time. Without being in a fashion school and attending my local community college, I was lucky enough to score volunteer work at Mecedes Benz Fall Fashion Week. Watching the models walk down the runway, and seeing how a fashion show was produced made me crave working in the industry way more than it ever has. I idolize Kelly Kutron, and had the most amazing opportunity to watch and listen to her speak about her life and her career. Event planning or public relations is what I hope to be apart of in the near future.
At this time in my life, my experiences have provided me with an incredible amount of knowledge that will make me stand out and help me to be more than successful at the Fashion Institute of Technology. I am finding my place in life, and understanding my strengths, areas of improvement, and talents. I would be genuinely honored to be apart of the Fashion Institute of Technology. I have done my share of searching left and right for the perfect college, that can offer me amazing opportunities to attaining a career in this industry. The business of fashion shares my view on trends, along with my skills. I will finish my thoughts with a quote from Yves Saint-Laurent, “Fashions fade, style is eternal.” The Fashion Institute of Technology is the place for me to pursue my dreams, and for my life to start.
