Formal examinations are the only effective way to assess a student's performance. Continual assessment such as coursework and projects is not a satisfactory way to do this.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

It is believed that formal examinations are the only effective way to access students’ performance. Some people argue that this is because these help students greatly improve their analytical ability. While I partly agree with this idea that formal examinations are of importance, I still believe that continual assessment such as coursework or projects should be regarded as equal as the former.

Formal examinations play an obviously essential role in evaluating students’ performance. First, in order to get high marks in these exams, students will inevitably enhance their reasoning and analysis skills, which are useful and necessary to their work in the future. Meanwhile, continual assessment such as coursework and projects is considered to be disadvantageous in this context. In the era of information, people especially are students often search for the information they want on the Internet, followed by outstanding coursework and projects. By cutting and pasting from the internet, students will certainly get high results without having intensive knowledge of the subjects, followed by the gradual loss of analytical ability.

However, people argue that there are many advantages are seen in continual assessment. First of all, the continual rate of testing will give students an incentive to study harder so as to get academic performances. Moreover, coursework and projects will give teachers accurate measurement of their students’ intelligence and creativity. More and more, many learners say that they prefer continual assessment to oral and practical exams, since they may feel too nervous to remember what they have learned by heart or what they deeply grasp.

In brief, these 2 types of examinations like two-folding knives. Therefore, it is learners attitude that helps them build up their knowledge and skills.
