Task 2: The increase in food production owes much to fertilizers and better machinery, but some people think that it has a negative impact on human health and community. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It has been said that fertilizers and advanced machinery facilitate the growth of food production. However, some people believe that this practice has a significant influence on individuals’ health as well as the environment. While I agree that it has some advantages, I would argue that there are still many drawbacks that should be solved.
On the one hand, admittedly, modern farming and agricultural practices benefit cultivation in some aspects. First, it helps farmers improve the quantity of food production. For example, Vietnam has ranked second among rice-exporting countries due to applying new technology to their farming methods. Second, the more advanced machinery, the less effort the farmers have to make, while the productivity increases significantly. Therefore, fertilizers and developed machinery have advantages in terms of farming productivity and saving effort.
On the other hand, even though this development can enable farmers to improve food production in some ways, this essay believes that it should be viewed negatively, and there are certainly alternative solutions. To begin with, overusing fertilizers is detrimental to the soil because of their poison. It is clear evidence that in many third-world countries, people accept the trade-off of the environmental value of using chemicals in farming to produce a great amount of food. On top of that, if toxins from pesticides or fertilizers sink into the soil, they will flow into the rivers, which are the main water source for people. For instance, a village in Ha Tinh experienced half of the residents getting cancer due to chemical abuse in cultivation. However, farmers can solve this problem totally by superseding using fertilizers with organic farming as well as increasing the price, resulting in food quality and safety.
In conclusion, while the benefits of using fertilizers and advanced machinery make it seem like a good idea, it has numerous downsides regarding health and the environment. Furthermore, organic farming should be the optimal alternative due to the quality and safety it brings.
