On the upcoming holiday season, two new gaming products will duke it out for customers. The first of this is the Nintendo DS (officially stands for Nintendo Developer’s System but can also mean Duel Screen), and the second is the Sony PSP (Playstation Portable). Both Nintendo and Sony said they’re aiming toward the same older audience, but each of these handheld will take on completely different approaches for portable gaming. First, let’s compare the hardware and features of these machines. The DS’s most important feature is that it has 2 screens. The 2nd screen can be use as a touch screen and write messages wirelessly. The touch screen can provide unlimited potential on new ways of playing games as long as a developer is willing to take risks. DS uses a cartridge format for storing the game, which means no load times. The PSP on the other hand, focuses more than just gaming. It has a more powerful processor and video card than the DS enabling it to have far superior graphics. It can play games, movies, and music in UMD format (Universal Media Disk). The UMD allow for more space storage so the games could be longer with more cinemas and better quality sounds. But the UMD format requires a built in laser disk reader which will causes load times within games and eat up more battery life, which bring me to the next comparison. Battery life is crucial to the success a handheld; Nintendo’s Gameboy was able to mercilessly beat all of its completion, who had far superior hardware but low battery life, was arguably due to its great battery life. The DS is no different, it has up to 10 hour for all of its game, around 6 hours if it is Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) enabled. Wi-Fi allow DS owners to play online with anyone in the world as long as they are in an internet hotspot, the PSP also have this feature. Unlike the DS, the PSP’s battery life when using Wi-Fi is unconfirmed by Sony. Analysts speculate that it could be as low as 2 hours when Wi-Fi enabled. For offline gaming, the PSP has 6 hour of battery life for games with simple graphics, and around 4 hour for more better looking games. But battery life is not as important as the games themselves. What gamers really want are games that are fun, the hardware specs and battery life are not as important. Nintendo’s franchises have always been killer aps that never disappoint. They are working on 20 tittles for the DS, most noticeably a new Mario and Super Smash Brothers game. Over 100 developers are working on DS tittles including Electronic Arts, SquareEnix, Capcom, Konami, and Namco. All promises to bring their high profile franchises to the DS and make good use of the 2nd screen feature. Sony does not have a good reputation for having good first party games, so they rely much on third party to make games for the PSP. Among the big third party games are Metal Gear Acid, Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, and a rumored Grand Theft Auto game. Almost the same amount of developers is working on the PSP as the DS. Both of these handhelds are evolutions of portable gaming. The DS focuses on an innovative evolution while the PSP focuses more on technological advancements. The type of gamers that would buy the DS would be the type that wants to try something new and want to play it for long period of time. PSP buyers will be gamers who want a better version of already existing ideas. We’ll see which one of these handhelds will turn out as people hoped when they will be release this holiday season.
