Save me
As I lie awake that fateful night, I heard a scream so loud my ears almost burst. It was a continuous deafening cry for help. I was sure it was a woman. I wanted to help her but my legs won’t move. I was paralyzed. My body was immobile; I could only shift my head. My senses were working but I couldn’t move.
As time passed by, the scream was growing louder and becoming more and more desperate. I wanted to help her so badly but my body was not cooperating. I was eager to escape this paralysis. I wanted to go rescue her.
I didn’t want to give up. So I kept trying. A little voice inside my head said, “You couldn’t do anything about it. It’s already too late. You’re already too late.” I yelled in disagreement but no voice came out of my mouth. What is happening to me? Was this some kind of disease wherein someone hears a strange voice and suddenly loses sanity? Was I imagining things? No, I wasn’t. All of this is real. Something pierced my eardrum. It was the woman. She was still asking for help. In between deep gasps of air she yelled, “Save me, save me.” I don’t know why no one has helped her yet. It already felt like an hour since I first heard her. Was everyone like me? Paralyzed? Or were they just ignoring her?
I panicked. I struggled to get these body parts moving. But there was nothing I could do. So I just cried. I didn’t know what else to do. I was crying and saying sorry. My heart tightened as I said the words. I blinked away the tears but when I opened my eyes there was nothing. Darkness loomed all over the room. As my eyes adjusted, the voice, the woman screaming for help said in a very faint manner, “I am dying.
These are my children and look what they have done to me! Their cruelty and lack of discipline caused my death,” she said. Right after uttering those words the scene changed, I wasn’t in my room anymore. I was in a mountain looking at men cutting up hundred-year-old trees without even a slight hesitation in their eyes. I was about to stop them when the place changed again. I was brought to a factory near a river, a dead, disgusting river. At first sight one would already know that no living organism could survive in there. I bet that no fish is even alive there today. Every fish that was in there was killed, poisoned. Who was the culprit? The factory.
The place shifted, I was no longer in that river; I was already in a busy street. Heavy traffic, thick pollution, mountain of garbage. There were street sweepers but there were more polluters. When the stoplight signaled go, cars of different shapes and sizes came zooming past us. One even opened up its window to throw out a big plastic of junk he got from a popular fast-food chain.
The street turned to water. And now I was in the middle of the sea riding a boat and watching a man throw dynamite into the water. I wanted to stop him but my body just went past him. I was like a ghost and it scared me. But what scared me most were the deafening explosion and the amount of dead fish that floated right after it. With that explosion, no fish around that area could’ve been spared. The little, big and probably even the eggs were slew. And the corals, what would happen to the corals? The ecosystem would be totally disturbed. The tears came running from my eyes. I couldn’t stop them. My heart was pounding so hard. What have we done? We humans are killing the Earth. We are killing each other.
I felt a presence. Someone kind and lovable wrapped its arms around me and said, “You can make a difference. You can still save me; you can still save the human race.” I turned to face her but she wasn’t there and I wasn’t on a boat anymore. I was in my room, shivering and crying. It was mother Earth and I will save her.
