Please raise [up] your hands

Hi teachers,

Raise in the dictionary says it's a transitive, is it ungrammatical to say "raise up your hands"?

Thank you.

Hi Mister Micawber,

Thank you for your help.

1. Do you mean "Please raise your hands" is natural, and in normal circumstances you would drop the 'up'?

2. Could I ask if 'unnatural sentences' mostly be used in 'informal conversations?

1. Yes.
2. No, they are mostly used by non-native speakers. When I say 'unnatural', it means that I cannot fault the grammar but that it is not native expression.
