Please proofread sentence

After questioning the coach's tactics, the team members was not surprised to see Evan benched for a few games.

Why is it was and not were? Isn't team member plural?

Thanks!

It's not the only error in the sentence. Presumably, Evan questioned the coach, not the team members, but that's how it reads, and presumably Evan is one of the team members. After Evan questioned the coach's tactics, the rest of his team was not surprised that he was benched for a few games.

I say to you with complete sincerity, find another English tutor today.

"Was" is wrong, but so is the structure of the entire sentence.

Unless this was an exercise for you to find multiple errors, don't pay for another lesson from this person.
