Please proofread my essay?

Hi can someone please proof read my essay? tell me what's good and what's not? it's a character analysis froma character in the story "Everyday Use" By Alice walker. thanks in advance.

“Dee Is Dead”

“Everyday Use” by Alice Walker is about a family and their struggle with culture and family heritage. “Mama”, “Maggie”, and “Dee” are the main characters. Dee comes to visit after a long time of being away, and is still bothered by the way her family lives. She shows interest in taking some of her family’s heirlooms, though instead of honoring and embracing her roots, she seems to be cutting off her own family and heritage. In this essay, I will analyze and dive into the traits of the insensitive and arrogant Dee.

It is not hard to imagine Dee’s physical appearance when reading Mama’s description of her, as she steps out of the car to greet her mother and sister. Dee is described as wearing “A dress so loud it hurts my eyes”, “earrings gold and hanging down to her shoulders”, “Bracelets dangling and making noises”. Her hair is described as standing straight up like the wool on a sheep. From that you can tell that Dee is a bold and flashy type of person.

Before Dee even greets her mother, she grabs her Polaroid and takes pictures of her mother, sister, and the house. When mama calls her Dee, she states that Dee is “Dead”, and her new name is Wangero. Dee changed her appearance and her name, even though she was named after her aunt. This shows that Dee is trying to let go of her past, and become a new person. She does not care who she was named after; she is apathetic and indifferent about her name and her true family roots. Dee snapping pictures of her family and the house makes you think that Dee is rude and thinks her family is living backwards.

When Dee sits down to eat, she notices that her family is still using the benches her father made and is amused by that, and she goes to the churn and the dasher. She then wraps them up, so she can take them home with her. Finally, she goes to her mother’s trunk, grabs some quilts and asks her mother if she can take them. She expects her to say yes, because Dee is selfish and thinks no one can say no to her. However to Dee’s surprise, her mother refuses. The quilts belong to Maggie, because Dee is ungrateful and just wants the quilts for decoration, Maggie, on the other hand knows the quilt’s value and the time spent on them. Dee leaves the house angrily and tells her mother that she doesn’t understand her heritage. Little does she know she is the one that is wrong. Dee thinks she can just barge into her family’s house, and take things.

Dee thinks that her family is living backwards, that she’s right and they’re wrong. She is favoring a false heritage that is not her own in place of her real heritage. In conclusion, Dee is a self-centered, arrogant, selfish individual who ignores her family roots and is blind to the true meaning of family and heritage, and I think if she stays that way, Dee will be “dead” forever.
