Discoveries and invention of technologies are always welcome until we, humans, find a way to abuse its benefits and be adversely affected by it. This is the case with almost every technology we cannot seem to survive with today. Computers, cell phones, mp3 players, and so on are some examples that have not existed hundred years ago but which we now heavily rely on and carry almost every day. Among all the discoveries and invention of technologies, however, automobile stands as the beauty of all invention which plays a greater importance to the American society despite its negative effects. Automobile’s ability to transport from places to places has significantly changed the lives of almost all Americans socially, environmentally, and economically.
The first and foremost reason why automobile was ever created was for transportation. Hundred years ago when automobiles did not exist, it was very inconvenient for people to reach their destination; they either had to walk long distances or ride on horses, which could take days or even weeks. Socially, it was difficult for people to get around and meet people outside their “crowd” and home. Therefore, there was very limited social life. The saying “it’s a small world” did not really take into effect until automobiles took over the business industry. When the first automobile boom occurred during the late 1800’s, it was a clear success. Many people claimed that owning an automobile has affected their life in a positive way. Automobiles allowed a convenient and easier access to transportation which many people longed for. People no longer worried about getting to places and became more social outside their comfort zone. Also, people gained freedom through owning an automobile. As a student, I find validity in this statement. Before I was given a driver's license, my life was a chaos. I had to waste time walking home from school and from waiting for my ride when I needed one. Time, without my own automobile, quickly passed by especially. When I was given the privilege to drive and have my own car, my life instantly changed. I gained freedom and time. I no longer had to wake up early to get to school and when I needed something, I had my own automobile to do the job. Further, automobiles not only reduced the time traveling but also gave comfort and joy to people.
Not suprisingly, automobiles soon became an essential piece of technology many people praised and demanded. Long before when transportation was tough, people rarely explored the area outside their home. However, soon after automobiles were released, new discoveries were made. People now had a chance to view landscapes. With automobiles, family could travel to other lands and be awestruck by the scenery. This inspired creativity and a discovery of new nature beyond their imagination. Environmentally, people were challenged by the exposure of new landscape and were mesmerized by the beauty of the new discovery. (How can I make this paragraph longer? Should I add another personal example?)
The benefits automobiles brought to the society were significant. To the business industry, increased demand for automobiles brought a positive outcome. More workers were being hired, reducing the unemployment rate. Furthermore, cars industrialized America in employment issues. The increase in jobs gave more opportunities to job-seeking men. After the first automobile boom, competition in the automobile industry increased and new brands of automobiles started to arrive. It became clear that automobiles impacted the society not only socially but also economically as well. Economically, the automobile industry became a standing part of the business world.
The impact of the automobile in American society was immense. The role automobiles play is crucial socially, environmentally, and economically. The life without an automobile could not be fathomed. We need to never forget to appreciate the impact of the automobile and effects it has created.
