I'm describing something I did in the past, but feels that the present perfect makes it more real. I say:

1. What I've done is combine the material and designs of these two items to make it a more complete and useful item. OR can I use:

2. What I did was combined the material and designs of these items two to make it a more complete and useful item. OR

Can I mix tenses:

3. What I've done here was combined the material and designs of these two items to make it a more complete and useful item.

Please pick the correct answer for me. Thank you.

Hi PreciousJones,

The correct answer here is 2. EXCEPT it should read: What I did was combine the material and designs of these two items to make it a more complete and useful item.

You cannot say "What I did was combined" because the verb 'to do' is already in the past tense (did) so there is no need to put any subsequent verbs in the past.

You cannot mix the tenses as
