Dear teachers,
Could you please proof-read my transcript of SHAWN DOLLAR: http://www.goldmansachs.com/citizenship/10000-small-businesses/US/meet-the-owners/shawn/0-00201-shawn-profile.html
I’m Shawn Dollar, owner of STRUM WELDING based in Pilot Point Texas that makes me a Woman of Steel. We service the local farmers and ranchers. We supply items that they need on a regular basis for feeding and watering their animals and that's s kind of lead us to the industrial side of things. Welding is a problem-solving career. Everyone comes in with a different problem. When I enjoy most of this, I can say “I can take your ideas and dreams and make them into reality.”
When my husband Dale and I started the business in 1998 when we took the business over, we didn't have the money to hire anyone else. We did it all. He took care of the back, the shop and the production and I did all the book work, customer service. Anytime there was any technical work, he would come in and help the customers with that.
I found the Goldman Sachs 10,000 small businesses program through one of the mentors I had, next thing I knew I was doing an interview, they accepted my application, and before I knew it, I was in class. Before the program, I was not confident and decisions that I made on a day-to-day basis. I went into the program seeking knowledge on how I can be a better leader. It gave me the steps to get there so now I have a plan for growth and also I have developed a strategy to get there. **** ?? Probably most from Human Resources, this has been a mom-and-pop job shop for many, many years with no structure from the Human Resources. **** ?? was able to develop an employee policy and better structure to help my people grow.
I've gotten a new outlook on my work and my capabilities. I don't have to do it all. I just have to be smart enough to hire people that can do it as well or better. Goldman Sachs helped me figure that out and gave me the empowerment to go for it. Our revenues have increased 26% since I graduated and we're on target to double our sales for the next year. One of the things that I would like to do is provide better opportunities for my people. I want my company to grow and I want to cultivate them into leaders so that they can take what they know and teach other people and keep the cycle going. Our mission is to provide quality jobs for our people and quality service for our customers.
It’s just amazing all the opportunities that are out there and I wanna more.

Thanks and best regards,
David Kim
