After several weeks of waiting, I was finally accepted into the Vancouver Relief Camp. I have been in the waiting list, for this Relief Camp, for several weeks now; I’ve been waiting ever since I rode the rails west hoping to find a job, any job. Prior to coming to Vancouver I worked in a local factory in Toronto, but when the depression hit the plant; I was laid off along with several other hundred workers. I did not decide to ride the rails immediately, after I was laid of, for I tried to get another job near Toronto. Unfortunately however, businesses were only looking to get rid of people and no one was hiring.
A friend of mine then had told me that many were moving west in search of a job. I figured I had nothing to lose and so I decided to ride the rails to Vancouver. After I had arrived in Vancouver, I found out that things weren’t much better here; so instead of getting a job I requested to work in a local relief camp. This seems to have been a very smart choice, as I am getting paid 20 cents a day with another 1.3 cents for tobacco. But getting here was no piece of pie either; there were numerous rules and conditions for this relief camp:
? Workers must be single, male, not living at home, healthy, unemployed, 18 + years old and not a political agitator
? Relief Camp workers can not come back into the relief camp if left for any other reason besides to find a job
? All workers will be paid 20 cents a day
? Each worker will receive a 1.3 cent allowance for tobacco daily
? All workers will receive free transportation to the relief camp
? All workers must complete 44 hours of work each week
? All workers are given a set of work cloths, soap and towel, a bunk bed, 3 meals a day and the use of showers, toilets and laundry facilities.
? Workers may not form or join a committee of any sort; all complaints must be submitted individually to the camp superintendents or foremen
This is all I have time to write about for now; I am being called for my shift now. I will try to keep track of all the things happening until my next entry.

This is not a relief camp! It is a slave camp! We are being told to work 8 hours a day and 4 hours on Saturdays while only getting paid 20 cents a day! This is an out rage. One of my buddies the other day died due to the common flu
