Cal McAllister and Lan Cohen, are founders and creative directors of an advertising agency, called Wexley School for Girls. In the article we can find a common problem that most of business could have when they are managed by two different people; communication problems. These problems are first commonly between both directors; therefore the same communication problems are transmitted to employees. Wexley School for Girls’ employees did not know how to act exactly, because they received totally diverse orders for both directors, they did not know which course of action they had to take, so sometimes they finished doing nothing. Cal and Lan had a big problem trying to talk about these issues; both felt that they would hurt the feelings from de other. They needed help of someone else to establish a solid communication between them, so they called a business consulting firm that maybe would help them. The consulting firm gave them a course of a month and made interviews to the staff to know exactly what they thought. The consultants helped them define the roles for their senior leadership team. Now they also have a system for choosing new business, and when they have something to say to the agency, it comes from both of them together. As we saw in chapter 5, one important step within “Steps in Managing Diversity Effectively” is increase diversity skills, these diversity skills can be developed through managers’ focus on the interaction between them and their subordinates, and improving the way they work with different kinds of people. The directors of the agency aforementioned have found the way to communicate effectively with their employees, and more important with themselves. They are the forehead of the agency, they have to share their ideas and thoughts in a connected way to be able to create and share with their employees the organizational goals, tasks, and every single point. With an open communication they can take advantage of the variety of their ideas, and their employees’ ideas. It is important to accept when we need help, sometimes are issues that cannot be fixed by ourselves, so we need to search for support for our company, also we have to take in consideration our abilities and weakness and found the best way to deal with theses. As in the case the directors of the agency, noticed the lack of communication, and they seek help to improve it.
