When you think organic food, what comes to mind? The USDA National Organic Program defines organic food as “organic produce and other ingredients are grown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms, or ionizing radiation. Animals that produce meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products do not take antibiotics or growth hormones”(3). Organic food has come a long way in terms of taste and quality where waste becomes food for another, and cheap substitutes don’t work and cant replace organic farming with chemical farming and expect anything but depleted, poor soil, and unstable prices. As Gary Hirshberg states, “organic isn’t just about food, it’s a much more expansive way of thinking that embraces cyclical…” (Food Inc, 48). Organic is a way of life which in fact improves the world. Gary Hirshberg states the first time he tried organic food. His roommate made Garys family an organic meal, they were all willing to try it. They tried eating the organic pumpkin soup and he explains it as “a crime” (Food Inc, 48). He states that his family did not like the taste and wanted the chemical foods to be brought. They tried the other food that his roommate made for him and they all came around to how good organic food actually is. One of the flaws that make it hard for people to believe organic food is good for you is the fact that the taste of organic food was a challenge. Gary goes on to explaining that even though at the time the taste of organic foods was bad, that’s not necessarily why people began supporting it. Many people got involved in the organic movement because they were again the “industrial agriculture, some came just because they enjoyed growing their own food” (Food Inc, 49). This movement luckily brought in chefs who started making dishes “brown rice and seaweed which eventually matured into tasty cuisines” (Food Inc, 49). “To win acceptance, it had to be truly delectable” (Food Inc ,49). That is what slowly started happening as organic food started getting better in taste. In an interview with the George Siemon who is a CEO of the Organic Valley which is known at the “largest cooperative of organic farmers in the United Sates.” He states that “in our case organic has reduced our input costs, and we’ve seen a lot of benefits on the farm level”(5). Gary also states that “we built a solar-heated greenhouse that used no fossil fuels, herbicides, pesticides, or chemical fertilizers. Yet it produced enough food to feed ten people three meals per days, 365 days per year” (Food Inc, 49). This goes to show that organic farms not only increase our nation’s health, but also improves our environment. Our environment needs to be taken care of. Chemically processed farming not only damaged our bodies and health, but also damages our environment. Organic farming builds healthy soils. A “large nine-year study by USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) shows that organic farming builds up organic matter better than convention no-till farming”(6) . If we want to have healthy food, we need to go to the beginning; we need to have healthy soil to grow our fruits, vegetables, and so forth. Putting chemicals and pesticides will eventually lead to soils that cannot flourish on its own, which causes the food and the environment to become unhealthy. Organic farming also helps fight erosion. “A major study comparing organic and chemically treated wheat fields showed that the organic field featured eight more inches of topsoil than the chemically treated field and also had only one-third of the erosion loss”(6) . Not a lot of people really think about how erosion affects us, but it is a very serious problem that affects our food supply, our land, and humans. Organic farming has already taken steps to stop erosion from occurring. Global warming is an extremely serious issue in our world, and if we all switch to organic food and farming believe it or not, we could help with global warming. “Rodale Institute Farming Systems Trial is America’s longest running, side-by-side comparison of conventional and organic agriculture. The trial, running since 1981, has shown that a healthy organic agriculture system can actually reduce carbon dioxide and help slow climate change” (6). Global Warming is such a big part of our environment, and doing everything we can to slow it down should most certainly be on everyone’s agenda. So why do people still go for chemically processed farming? Why is there such a big controversy when it comes to chemically made food and organic food. A lot of people have ideas about what they feel is healthy and not. Parents all have different views on what is healthy for their children and family. In an article by Sean Poulter who is a journalist. He states that, “Parents have been warned to avoid artificial additives used in drinks, sweets, and processed foods amid a ling to behavior problems in children. A study funded by the government’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) is understood to have drawn a ling with temper tantrums and poor concentrations.” Chemical processed foods have not only caused our nation to suffer with diseases such as “diabetes, cancer, and obesity, but it has also worsened our global warming, and losing one one-third of America’s original topsoil” (Food Inc, 48). “More than 200 other studies have shown links between low doses of BPA and adverse health effects, according to the Breast Cancer Fund, which is trying to ban the chemical from food and beverage containers”(4). There are many studies, interviews, facts that support why chemically processed food is the wrong way to go, yet no one does anything about it. There are many reasons as to why people eat chemically processed food and two of the biggest distinctions between organic food and chemical foods are the price and the taste. The price of organic food is much more than food made with chemicals, and that causes people who to steer away from buying organic food which in fact limits them to eating the chemically processed foods. Gary Hirshberg explains why the organic price is higher and it is because, “Organic regulations require that farmers use cultural, biological, and physical methods in protecting crops and these often take longer to yield results than indiscriminate use of chemicals, fertilizers, and the like” (Food Inc ,54). The other factor is the taste; many say that organic food and chemically processed foods have different tastes. Some say organic taste better and other’s disagreeing and say that chemically processed foods have a better taste. Trying both organic and chemically processed, organic food did taste much better and causes me to go out and buy organic food, why not spend more money on something that helps the environment and your body. Food is one of the main sources that keep the nation and the people in it running. We have expanded our un-healthy food chains and gone world-wide. “Fast food companies are now franchised in over 100 countries, and in the U.S. alone there are over 200,000 restaurant locations”(2). Our world is run by foods that are made chemically which has lead us to “buried toxic waste everywhere, worsened global warming, and exacerbated ailments ranging from cancer to diabetes to obesity” (Food Inc, 48). We have become dependent on chemical products that have put our people and the environment in a lot of trouble but we don’t do anything about it. Companies now are steering more towards natural organic food making. “Organic Stands for many things, a philosophy of wholeness, the science of integration, a rallying cry for keeping nature humming as the interdependent web of life” (Food Inc ,58). Organic changes our health, and our environment. We become healthier, happier, and start building our environment back up
