With this letter I would like to show my motivation for securing the VU Fellowship for the academic year 2014-15.
Mathematics has always fascinated and intrigued me from my early education. While my peers didn’t appreciate the subject, I was always diligent in practicing and finding solutions to mathematical problems. Keeping this interest in mind, I decided to build my career in a field that requires quantitative analysis. I chose Accounting and Finance in my high school, which provided further insight into means of quantitative analysis. After the completion of my A-levels, I pursued the ACCA professional degree, which was considered a jewel in the financial circles of Pakistan. It helped me enhance my knowledge of Accounting, Finance and Financial Management. The Masters in Business Administration-Financial Management from VU University Amsterdam will help me build on my existing knowledge and provide a solid rung to achieve my goals of becoming a Finance Executive.
Even though my educational endeavors have fared quite well, I had to face a few challenges in my early years of schooling; however, I overcame them with motivation and perseverance. My performance dipped in the second year of O-level’s and my school summoned my parents to warn them that they will end their association with me if this persisted. Overcome with guilt and embarrassment I took it upon myself to change the situation. With my hard work and motivation, I was able to secure straight A grades and was also offered 100% scholarship by the school. I was also bestowed with a gold medal for my outstanding performances.
I carried that same resolve to my further studies and passed with First Class Honors from Oxford Brookes University, UK. Similarly, I have one of the best averages in the ACCA professional examinations. At the same time I participated in extracurricular, sports and social events organized by our school. Furthermore, I also volunteered to manage funds and donations at our locality in the aftermath of a deadly earthquake that jolted Pakistan. I have also spent two months in the Netherlands for two consecutive years. It was an amazing experience whereby I learned about the Dutch culture, people and way of life. While I have also had the opportunity to travel to the rest of Europe, I feel that the Netherlands is naturally the most beautiful and homely country. A chance to study at VU University Amsterdam will allow me to learn and experience the culture more closely. I found the Netherlands to be open and flexible, where English is widely spoken and understood, unlike its other European counterparts. It’s a place where I can communicate openly without any barriers. Furthermore, adding Dutch to my language skills will be a huge asset.
In addition to that, VU University is based in Amsterdam, one of the top European financial centers and home to the world’s oldest stock exchange. The university is deeply integrated with these markets and has firm links with the finance professionals. Not only will I be able to network but also find a sound footing in this financial industry. Thus, the prospects of gaining diverse international financial, business knowledge and experience combined will complement my professional and career goals.
Securing the VUFP Scholarship will turn the black and white of this letter into a reality. High quality education demands financially sound background. My family has always supported me through thick and thin but belonging to the middle class has its limitations. Reminding myself repeatedly of this fact I had taken it upon myself to carve my own path. With unwavering dedication and persistence I was able to win full scholarship in my high school. I am highly focused towards my life’s ambitions and I will leave no stone unturned for its actualization. This scholarship will extinguish my financial concerns allowing me to become a productive member of the class. I will bring Pakistan to the university by becoming its cultural ambassador. I can add value to the program by bringing a new and fresh perceptive to the classroom. Similarly, Not only will I get to share my experiences of business functions in the third world countries with my peer but also learn more about successful business and financial market ventures in Europe.
While Pakistan’s economy is undergoing a gradual transition towards development, there is a need for well qualified and ethical business professionals to instill confidence and satisfaction among different stakeholders. The VU University Amsterdam’s education will not only help me realize my own potential but give me the ability to serve Pakistani interest as well.
I deserve this scholarship due to my sound educational background, academic achievements, skills and experiences and above all my determination and commitment to succeed and serve my community. I assure you that given the scholarship, I will perform exceptionally well. This opportunity will not only stimulate and encourage me to pursue my dream but it will also allow me to gain international exposure and benefit from VU Amsterdam’s world-class education.
Thank you for your consideration. Regards, Bilawal Khan
