Due to the development and rapid expansion of supermarkets in some countries, many small, local business are unable to compete. Some people think that the closure of local business will bring the death of local communities. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The past few decades have seen the dramatic rise of major supermarkets in many cities. Some argue that this development is becoming a major concern and is detrimental to small shops. In their opinion, local communities will suffer. I do not support this view, and I feel that communities could still thrive through other means such as tourism and the arts.

First of all, I believe that the proliferation of global supermaket chains will not result in the death of local communities. Tourism could still support the local economy. For instance, despite the recent expansion of French-owned superstore Carrefour on the island of Bali, their local community and economy have remained as vibrant as ever. Though Carrefour affected several business, those related to tourism such as shops selling native handicrafts are making huge profits. Furthermore, small groceries selling liquors and locally-made alcoholic beverages are still found everywhere. Tourism has saved the local community of the island.

Second, art and the culture of a city could mitigate the negative impact of superstores on the local community. For example, Paris is undeniably a cosmopolitan city. Several chains of supermarkets abound every where, yet the identity of Paris has not been lost. This is because of the unique art and culture that the city offers. Even with the proliferation of supermarkets, the city has remained as interesting as ever and many people still prefer Paris as a destination for their holiday. The architecture of the building and the paintings in the museums are enough to counteract the detrimental effects of supermarkets on the local communities.

To conclude, while there are worries that supermarkets, especially the global store chains, could be disadvantageous to the local community, I believe that other sectors such as tourism and art can still support the local economy.
