There are certain aspects which are common to every organisation. HR, Operations, Administration are to name a few. However, the most indispensable and challenging aspect remains Finance. Being an aspiring and ambitious student of Commerce from the economic capital of India, this subject clearly enthrals me the most and my entrepreneurial background only works as a catalyst to this interest.
I graduated from xxx college of Commerce and Economics, which is one of the most renowned institutes in Mumbai for commercial studies. After securing 77.86% in the SSC examination in 2003, I joined this institute as I was very sure of pursuing business studies. Supporting teachers and excellent guidance further fuelled my interest in Accountancy. I also scored 92% in Accountancy in HSC examinations. I have an apptitude for math and my skills come from courses such as Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Probability and Statistics. After completing HSC, I began to help my father managing his investments. I started making small investments in equities of various companies based on my little research. To further broaden my understanding of making investments, I took courses in Financial Markets, Capital Markets and Commodities Market by the NCFM. These courses gave me insights about markets in India. Graduating from this college has enabled me to build strong basics also in the field of Economics, covering Micro, Macro Economics and Indian Economic system in great depth. Now I feel that I am prepared to take my understanding of Accountancy, Economics and Mathematics to another level which is Finance.
Apart from studies, I have always been very active in inter and intra college events. I have travelled widely in India, Middle –East Asia, Europe and South-East Asia. I was also a part of youth exchange camp by Lions Club in Finland in 2007 where youths from 15 countries participated. Also I was elected as the ‘Boy Camper of the year’. I spent a month in Finland where I explored Finnish culture and art.
After graduating from college in April 2008, I joined xxx Steel Industries Ltd.- one of the leading companies in manufacturing Galvanised wires and wire products in India. Working as Management trainee in this company has given me ground level exposure in the fields of Human Resource, Marketing and Operations. I was one amongst the team of 3 assigned to solve the communication problem between the head office and manufacturing units which are set up at different locations. Important documents relating to Sales, Purchases and Inventory were getting misplaced which lead to low productivity. We regularised the documentation using software which transferred data over computers. However, it took lot of time and patience to get people used to it. Employee’s resistance and pessimistic approach towards adopting new technology were making things difficult. We realised the need of training and counselling for the employees which made them realise its benefits. This also led to reduced expenditure in certain heads. Also I got an opportunity to represent the company in biggest exhibition of the Wire and Cable industry- ‘Wire and Cable 2008’. This enhanced my interpersonal skills. Overall, working at xxx Steel Industries Ltd. has advanced my understanding of Organisational behaviour and Economics. On a personal level, it has developed in me the importance of quality in work. Also as I was the youngest in the organisation, I have also developed the ability to interact with people from all walks of life. Working in a team has also provoked team spirit in me.
This work experience made me realise how my acquired skills could help me understand Finance with a fresh perspective and independent thinking. The course MSc in Accounts and Finance strikes an appropriate balance in both the disciplines. It lays emphasis on Corporate Finance, Risk Analysis and Financial Reporting which is what I intend to specialise in. This course will provide me a great opportunity to apply my acquired theoretical knowledge. Not only will I get an opportunity to study in xxx school’s highest rated departments but also will get an invaluable exposure into the financial service industry in the UK. MSc in Finance and Economics is my second choice as both the courses are very similar in structure relating to Finance.
Being from a joint family, I sincerely feel that culture and tradition should be a part of my life. Hence, Europe is the obvious choice for my post graduate study. The European style of working is quite different from the Indian and to experience that difference there is no place better than London. Although affected by recent crisis,London is the heart of the world's financial business and the centre of financial innovation and information. In addition to its financial and physical infrastructure and magnificent working environment, the City also benefits from dedicated and expert local government. London is also to home international modern and contemporary art. It is truly a World City and it would be very interesting and encouraging for me to work in such an environment.
I was a part of the xxx Summer School 2008. It is because of the motivation Summer School provided me that I want to study at xxx. I took the course MG-220 Management and Incentives in Modern Organisation owing to field of my work. I got my hands on world class case studies and realistic discussions. The mixture of highly qualified and experienced class mates, global classroom and excellent professors like Dr. xxx and Dr. xxx, made my experience worthy and I secured an ‘A’ Grade. xxx is very promising in terms of theoretical knowledge. It has high percentage of international students which adds to my experience of invaluable cultural exchange. I come from the country of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Dr. Manmohan Singh, who have been students at xxx. A degree from institution of such high esteem also holds a lot of respect and prestige for me.
Post study, I want to take a challenging position in a top consultancy firm in the UK. This would give a peek view into the financial systems in the European companies. After gaining considerable experience, I would like to work sometime in India understanding the financial scenario here and eventually set up my own consultancy firm for developing companies seeking to go international. The current trends in India predict more and more of globalisation in the upcoming years. Hence, a truly global experience will be rewarding to my career. With diverse experience and strong foundations, I think I can make valuable contributions to the class. Seeing the present scenario in the field of Finance, it may not be that rewarding but I am sure that I will be able to prove myself and be the best in this field.
