Please make a grammatical analysis of the sentence

Would you please make a grammatical analysis of the sentence? Does "after" really mean "despite",or "following something in time"? Why use "not after"? Is something omitted in the second part of the sentence?

I can't believe she'd do that, not after all I've done for her.

I'd say that both "despite" and "after (something in time)" is true to the meaning in the example sentence. It also doesn't have to be "not after" could just be 'after'. It's basically saying that after everything you have done you cannot believe she'd do what she did.

  • I'd say that both "despite" and "after (something in time)" is true to the meaning in the example sentence.
  • It also doesn't have to be "not after" could just be 'after'.

  • You could believe it if she did it before everything you've done (hence the 'not') but not after.

But if you replace "after" with "despite"(as the dictionary suggests), it seems that the sentence doesn't make any sense at all.

Well quite right, for that sentence. However consider:

After all I have done for you, you stab me in the back!

Despite all I have done for you, you stab me in the back!

Or like I said, it does not have to be "not after", you can drop 'not':

I can't believe she'd do that. After all I've done for her!

I can't believe she'd do that. Despite all I've
