0Although science has always been a love of mine, it is the interpersonal interaction that calls me to the nursing field. This persistent desire to help people became an actuality two years ago when I assumed my first volunteer position in the emergency room of Hendricks Regional Hospital. A small part of my duties involved helping support staff with patient admissions and discharges, serving as a liaison between the busy staff and visitors, and delivering patients and materials to various areas of the hospital. When not directly assisting the support staff, I listened attentively to the patients' concerns and helped to calm their fears. Most of all, I was just someone to listen.02br 00 In working with animals, I learned that continual care is vital to successful outcomes. Interruption or lack of that treatment can lead to disastrous results. In the rural communities surrounding my home, I witnessed the consequences of the absence of consistent medical care. As a farmer’s wife and daughter, I have lived and worked in many rural communities whose needs aren’t being met: when a family friends foot needed to be amputated due to severe diabetes, he was unable to get the medical care he required because of his lack of education in the severity of his condition and his inability to get to a hospital. His foot became infected, and he did not seek treatment. I did what I could to coax him to get the necessary care and provide the support I was capable of. My attempts did not prove fruitful. Mert died due to complications of that infection. Had he been better educated about the severity of his condition he might still be with us today. Encounters of this type and kind have shown me the consequences of medically underserved communities. I look forward to working toward a solution to this problem when I am a nurse and eventually as a Nurse Practitioner.02br 00 Working with people has always come naturally to me. I spent ten years in a 4-H program being a mentor and leader to younger members. The composure I gained as a 4-H leader helped me to excel in my role as Big Sister to 3 different adolescents and as a Court Supervised Child Advocate during my time spent receiving my first Bachelors degree. Since then, I have grown into mentoring roles that required more significant responsibilities. I am comfortable as a leader and mentor because I am confident in my ability to help others gain the knowledge they desire and enjoy their time spent doing it. The counseling and leadership skills I have developed will be a vital part of my work as a nurse. 02br 00 I always knew that I could gain knowledge from my patients as a nurse. My experiences at St. Vincent's and Wishard have only confirmed such inclinations and have immeasurably increased my love of nursing. Therefore, I remain determined to achieve my goal of becoming a nurse. I guarantee I do not have the highest GPA of the highly skilled applicants but I have the qualities needed to be an exemplary nurse. My determination and hard-working nature is shown through my graduation with my first bachelor's degree a full year early.02br 00 My life experiences have been foremost in bringing me to this point. I am mentally and emotionally prepared and persistent, willing to do what is necessary. I have developed the compassion and commitment to health care that will take me through the years to come. I anticipate my future to be full of more hard work and dedication and I look forward to the opportunity to provide for others.02br 02br 00*Please note: Please use my credentials for the May cohort (planning sheet, criminal history report). I withdrew from this course twice at Kansas State University due to a heavy course load, one resulted in a W and one resulted in an F because of my late withdrawal.
