Inspired by Coach Carter

Have you ever played for a high school sports team that had strict ground rules on and off the court that changed the way you looked at life? In the movie “Coach Carter” the students were required to maintain a 2.3 GPA, attend every class, sit in front and wear a jacket and tie on game day. But these students were not just your average high school students. They were student athletes. “Coach Carter” is inspired by a true-life story. Ken Carter received both high praise and criticism when he made national news in 1999 for benching his entire undefeated basketball team for poor academic performance. Coach Carter is not only an inspirational film it also has the great Samuel L. Jackson who teaches many essential life lessons.
Samuel L. Jackson plays Coach Carter, an inner city basketball coach and sporting goods store owner, who takes on an urban high school basketball team and predictably turns their year around. Carter’s players include a group of urban kids with off-the-court personal problems. A few include: a confused teen with the pregnant girlfriend, the escalating drug dealer with an overacting problem, the illiterate white kid, and the coach’s son who changes schools to play under his father guidance.
Samuel L. Jackson performs in the role of the kind of coach many high school students wish they had. For most high school students, they can not remember a single teacher who could have inspired them in quite the way that Jackson would have done. Jackson had an amazing spirit throughout the movie. The movie makes an impact on teenagers sending them the message that education is the first step on the path to empowerment, and that it is possible for students raised in poor neighborhoods to escape from the vicious cycle of poverty and violence. Students in the movie only went to school to play basketball. Shockingly even some of the students only showed up for basketball practice after school. The student’s attitudes soon changed after coach Carter stepped into the gymnasium. This movie not only inspired those characters in the film but also all of the viewers.
Many people were very upset with the ending of the movie. The basketball team worked hard on and off the court but lost before reaching the championship, but they did learn a life lesson. “Coach Carter” is an inspirational movie with many life lessons for everyone to relate to. You can work so hard for something and fail, but inside you know you have still won.
