Genetic engineering is an important issue in society today. Some people think that it will improve people’s lives in many ways. Others feel that it may be a threat to life on earth. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Genetic engineering is a heated topic in modern society. Some people assert that it will exert positive impacts on people’s lives in various ways, whereas others think that it might be a menace to life on earth. From my perspective, despite its potential downsides, genetic modification would benefit our lives immensely.

On one side of the argument, there are people who argue that genetic engineering would have beneficial effects on people’s lives. The reason for believing this is that gene-editing can transform plants, animals or even human brains and bodies to the enhanced forms. By this I mean this technique could be used to eradicate disease-causing mutations or enhance the descendants of plants or living creatures by adding beneficial gene variants into them. As an example, It is thought that gene therapy can be used to cure diseases such as HIV, herpes or even cancer. In reality, Chinese scientists announced that lung cancer can be treated by using CRISPR gene-editing.

On the other hand, those who feel that genetic engineering is the threat to life on earth might believe that there is a high degree of uncertainty when it comes to editing the genomes of living species especially if applied to humans. To be more specific, wrong edits and errors would possibly occur. And when this happens the gene edited would have some defects or unwanted characteristics. In that case, a person might become stronger and much more intelligent but aggressive and depraved. In the worst scene, some people would use this accidental result to create super soldiers. And this definitely is an unwelcome prospect.

In conclusion, I believe both arguments have their merits. On balance, however, I feel that despite the negative consequence that genetic engineering could entail, its benefits are far more significant.
