A few languages are increasingly spoken in different countries, while the usage of others is rapidly declining. Is this a positive or negative development?

Today, the usage of a few languages has spread globally, whereas other languages have become endangered or even extinct. From my perspective, I think this is certainly a negative development because I believe that losing a language is synonymous with losing the culture and history of a community.

Language is one of the determinants of culture. Thus, If the global linguistic diversity continues to decline, then there would be a sad loss of cultural richness in the world. And this is probably an unwelcome prospect. In my opinion, language is more than a mean of communication, it also structures the way people perceive the world, which creates the social norms and values of a community. To illustrate this, Chinese is one of the most complex languages in the world. And this might be one of the explanations for why Chinese culture always feature complexity in everything, especially in the worship ceremony. In the same vein, people generally pass on cultural values verbally via their indigenous language. Because of this, if the language becomes extinct, future generations would no longer practice these values.

In addition to this, the histories of every community are written in their indigenous languages. Therefore, if these languages disappear, future generations would not understand their country’s histories. This could be a deeply regrettable result because every innovation, experience, and lesson were recorded in history. By this, I mean that future generations would not be able to continue to develop as well as appreciate what their ancestors have achieved.

In conclusion, I believe that this is a negative development because I think the loss of linguistic diversity would lead to the loss of cultural values and the history of many countries.
