The line graph below gives information on Goods transported in UK from 1974 to 2002. Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown below. Make comparisons where relevant.
The line graph illustrates how many tons of goods were delivered in four particular ways of transport in UK from 4-year intervals, starting in 1974.
Overall, road transport was by far the most popular method of transporting goods in almost 28 years while on the contrary, the fewest products were carried by pipeline. In addition, all kinds of transport generally witnessed ascending trends over this period.
At the start of the period, the highest number of goods was shipped on the roads, amounting to 70 million tons (mt). By contrast, the figure for products transported through pipeline, the lowest of all, was under 10 mt. Besides, two remainders shared similar figures of around 40 mt.
Thereafter, the road was continuously reported to be the leading mode of transport, despite a slight fluctuation in the quantity of goods. Similarly, after the figure for water transport was set to overtake that for rail in 1978, both ways fluctuated mildly till 2002. Meanwhile, the number of goods sent by pipeline underwent a gradual increase and reached a peak of 25 mt in 1994 before remaining stable until the end.
