after we had president's like Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, and Ulysses S. Grant. Rutherford B. Hayes, governor of

Ohio and Samuel J. Tilden, governor of New York were both known as honest and reformed men. In additon, both canidates

were experienced in politics, education, popularity in their state, and argumentative.

The presidential election of 1876 was considered to be important in American history. This election took place in the 1870's after we had president's like Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, and Ulysses S. Grant. Rutherford B. Hayes, governor of Ohio and Samuel J. Tilden, governor of New York were both known as honest and reformed men. In additon, both canidates were experienced in politics, education, popularity in their state, and argumentative.

Rutherford B. Hayes was a General during the civil war and had a degree from Harvard Law School,which played a part in helping the republicans choose to nominate him for president. Surprisliying , Hayes only wanted to serve one term as president of the United States. James G. Blaine, from Maine was suppose to be nominated for presidency, but rumors of railroad scandels ended his votes. In the voting of the election, Hayes needed twenty votes in order to win. During the election, they threw out information to make Hayes seem better than Tilden. They annouced that Hayes had been a soldier wounded for our country in battle. If he won, Hayes promised to end radical republican governments in the south.

Samuel J. Tilden, was a district attorney fighting corruption in New York. Tilden gained national attention by assailing the powerful Tammany Hale organization and prosecuting the Boss Tweed. In additon, becoming a great reformer helped him win the election for governor of New York. Tilden was nominated for presidency in 1876, by the democrats. The democrats had 184 of the 185 votes needed to win the presidential election. During, the final days of the campain, Tilden was the people's favorite and he was a sure thing for the winning of the election.

The candidates Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel J. Tilden had to overcome hardship and controversy. As if it was bad enough, it seemed as if they where going to start another civil war because of the election. Despite the election being disputeful and accusing only one still will win the battle. Hayes and Tilden both accused each other for messing with the votes. Hayes accused
the democrats i nrefusing to count the African American and other republicans votes, while the Tilden accused the republicans of ignoring many of his votes.

In the final stages of the election, Hayes began to think that Tilden had this election in the bag. Both parties claimed victory in the states of Florida, Louisiana, and South Carolina. However, for both parties accusement, the congress appointed a Congressional Committee to investigate. When the investigation started to take up way to much time, they ended the
investigation. The electoral commission decided the outcome and awarded all the disputed votes to Hayes. Rutherford B.

Hayes became the nineteenth president of the United States, even though many say it was stolen.
