Please help...comma hell!!!

“ He’s a dog, that’s what dogs do.” I have the dog in the yard, because he alerts me of any activity, and makes me feel safe. Furthermore, with all the homeless people’s activity in the alley you can understand why he barks.

Is the punctuation correct in these sentences? I have problems with run-ons and fragments.
