please help with the following sentence

It bugs me hugely to know how better to write the following sentence. Any help will be really appreciated.
Specifically,

(a) the underlined words are those that I am most confused about - between using "a" and "the"

(b) the sentence is wordy, although it's also polite. Can I make it shorter but keep the politeness?

"I am contacting you for an assistance in my quest for the possibility of a position in your group"

Thanks a lot
