Please help with my verbal English

Hello All. This is probably going to come across as a bit of an odd situation. Basically, I am a Britsh born Asian (Indian origin) and I struggle to converse in English confidently. I did not spend any time out of the country and went to school like everybody else. Though I did not do great at school, I came out with 4 GCSEs. I do not have any problems with writing or understanding English but it's just my verbal skills. I always had friends who spoke in my mother tongue (Gujerati) and generally, this is the language spoken at home. I mumble in English and say the wrong words. I need help and would really appreciate some advice and tips to overcome this.

I was a horrible English student in school, though it is the only language I was raised to speak. I am by no means scholarly in the subject now, but I did vastly improve my verbal and written skills by listening very keenly to how others spoke, especially those who I had good reason to believe were educated. A lot can also be learned by listening to those who are obviously not too well educated.

  • (learn what not to say, if you will) It isn't the best method, but I blew my chance during the formative years and I realized in my mid twenties that being able to communicate properly is well respected.
  • Parusing and utilizing forums like this could be helpful as well.
