Please help with comma usage and "nor"

Hello, I'm working on my personal statement for medical school applications and I would greatly appreciate your help with one sentence that's bothering me.

"I could not witness the gratitude of a patient who had been treated successfully with medication that I had helped develop, nor could I alleviate the suffering of someone who could not be cured."

In this case, is the usage of a comma before the word "nor" correct? Because I feel that it should be, but "could I alleviate..." doesn't seem like a full sentence to me. Thanks in advance for your help.
