Please help, which one is correct?

Hi, I am confused about the following sentences.
Situation: If I am walking down the street and come across with a friend.
Which of the following is correct?

1. I didn't know you were in Paris.
2. I didn't know you are in Paris.
3. I don't know you are in Paris.

No. 1 is correct.

No. 3 means that you still don't know the person is in Paris, which is inexplicable since you are looking at and talking to them in Paris!

People in my country always think no.3 is correct. seems like it's a common mistake.

maybe it's because most of the time we don't understand why we have to use past tense(like sentence no.1) when we are talking to someone.(supposed to use present tense)
