(All academic titles have colons, don't they?)

And what about: "An experience of Development...", with no article before "Development"? Several such examples I have found in google...

And is #1 incorrect, or just bad sounding and cumbersome?

And the last question: If by "experience" is meant the whole world's experience (not that of the author's single research) of the development of such systems, should I use "the" instead of "an"?

Oh, I see. I thought you meant it was only the experience of the one person, which is why "an examle" would have worked. This is a summary of the collective experience to date in developing ...

Try that - "Experience in developing" instead of "the developmenet of" - it's so hard to decypher!

I have the feeling you are talking about An experiment in the development of ...
Is that possible? Is this something like a scientific experiement?

I'm assuming this is a scholarly article. In that case, it's not unusual to have such a long title.
But from the title I should be able to understand what the article is about, but I'm having a little trouble understanding that. Can you quickly explain what it is that you are trying to put a title on?

No. It is exactly experience, that of the development and employment of these systems. In particlular, a system called AT-TECHNOLOGY is discussed. The paper gives a brief view on the applications of this system in teaching several disciplines.

It is exactly experience, that of the development and employment of these systems. In particlular, a system called AT-TECHNOLOGY is discussed. The paper gives a brief view on the applications of this system in teaching several disciplines.

On the basis of what you have said in the material quoted above, I would title the article as follows:

A case study in the development of integrated expert systems with an overview of their applications in education.

Here are my concerns:

1. You say systems (plural) in several places, and yet you specifically name one system which seems to be the only one the article is about. If there is only one, use the development of an integrated expert system.

2. You use the word education, but I wonder if your system is focused on something less all-inclusive, like instruction. This seems to be related to what we call instructional technology - for effectively teaching a given topic or skill to a given group of people.

3. If you still prefer education as a term here, if there is any focus on the level of student, you should include it in the title, using the exact term primary education, secondary education, or higher education, depending on what it is.

<>4. Experience is not commonly used in the title of such a paper in English, but case study means practically the same thing and is the usual wording.

That's why you prefer "case study"? First, the original title sufferes from the same illogicality, though at a stretch we can use "systems" because different versions and even "generations" of the same system are considered (or, rather, mentioned). Second, what if a study of the development of one system is extrapolated on the development of integrated expert systems in general? Should it be called a case study nevertheless? Anyway, thanks for that, I'll show it to the author as an alternative.

Well, yeah, it should really be education because the core algorithms of the system are very universal (independent of what is tought) and suitable for teaching a wide range of knowledge. That is, the system can be "configured" (by feeding with the course-specific materials) for different disciplines.

Mmm... no. Just the ability to use the system (which a piece of software) is required.

Case study = the study of one particular case (one system in our example)? And this 3-page article can hardly be called a study... It's only a brief overview of the experience and the perspectives.
