Essay & Composition Writing

Please help to review my IELTS writing test (task 2). Thank you so much! (01.09)

Task 2: Some people think that hosting an international sports event is good for the country, meanwhile some people think it is bad. Discuss both views and state your opinion.

When it comes to a controversial topic that worldwide sports events like The Olympics or FIFA World Cup have been deemed beneficial to the host countries, some people opine an opposite view, claiming that it does more harm than good. From my perspective, I am wholly in favor of the former view for a number of specific reasons.

On the one hand, host countries may confront huge expenses incurred for the organization of the event. The countries must burn a ton of money to build stadiums, improve infrastructure as well as rewards for winners. As a result, financial resources for other essential sectors such as education and healthcare systems will dwindle. The fact that China disbursed over one billion US dollars on The Olympics, meanwhile their residents complained constantly about the low-quality of public transport system in 2000 is a case in point.

On the other hand, in spite of expending billions of dollars, the games lift the nation’s spirit, promote the country’s standing on the global stage and especially benefit its hospitality industry. In those occasions, the hosts can disperse its culture and draw more foreign tourists. A report pointed out it is a common trend that tourism blossoms in host nations after international sporting events. In particular, the 1988 Seoul Games resulted in the 78% growth of for oversea visitors between the year 1986 and 1990 because the hosting locations became more popular in the time of the games through all types of media around the world.

In conclusion, although holding international sporting events would have some inevitable drawbacks, it is still worthwhile to do that because of development of tourism and the nation’s reputation.
