Many developing countries are currently expanding their tourist industries. Why is this the case? Is it a positive development?
Nowadays, tourist business has been enhanced significantly in many developing nations. There are several reasons which can explain this phenomenon, and in my opinion, it is a positive development if these countries can establish sustainable tourism.
There are some rationales for developing countries to invest largely in their tourist industries. Firstly, tourism is one of the major contributors in economies of these countries. In other words, it brings about many financial benefits to local people through jobs and services such as catering, accommodation, and selling souvenirs which are created to accommodate tourists. Secondly, tourism can increase business opportunities with other countries, particularly the developed ones. For example, Vietnam has been having a better trade relationship with many Western countries partly because tourists from these places came to visit Vietnam. Lastly, many less developed countries have gained more popularity and expanded their presence in the world through tourism such as some South-East Asians countries like Thailand and Vietnam.
The expansion of tourism can be advantageous if it is developed sustainably so that it does not take a toll on the environment and the lives of local people. Tourism can help to eliminate prejudice held by some people because they would learn and understand better about a different culture or a way of living. This understanding may result in people have more respect for others’ cultures and nations. Having more understanding and respect for each other can help people around the world live in harmony.
In conclusion, it is clear that there are several reasons for developing countries to enhance their tourist industries, and I believe that this development is positive if it is a sustainable development.
