Please help! tense problem

Dear teachers,

on a questionnaire, what is the correct tense for this question and why? Please British English, if there are any differences (as my teacher requires). Thank you!

1. Did you study?

2. Have you studied?

It's a questionnaire that asks you about what you did (have done?!) in your life. One question is about whether you had an academic career and I'm supposed to choose the right tense. So either "have you studied (literature)" or "did you study (literature)"?

Most references to past experience use the present perfect.
