Please Help Review My IELTS Writing Task 2?

Nowadays, many people cannot read or write. What problems does this cause?

What measures can governments take to solve these problems?

Today, the vast majority of the population are reported illiterate, which will possibly exert a profound adverse bearing on their lives. However, several measures can be taken by the government to address illiteracy.

The problem of literacy can cause several dire repercussions. First, this can lead to rising poverty rates. Undoubtedly, if people do not possess these rudimentary skills, they cannot land medium-salaried jobs, thus having to resort to labor-intensive yet low-paid ones. This means that they may struggle financially to cover some necessities namely food, water, and settlements. Moreover, the lack of these basic skills can lead to rampant labor abuse. This is because many people, especially those with bad motives, may try to sway the illiterate into signing no-wage contracts unawares. Consequently, without governmental intervention, these individuals would be exploited unrelentingly.

However, there exist certain steps governing bodies can take to address illiteracy. One possible solution is to increase the accessibility of education to all children and adults. For example, the authorities can provide free educational programs for economically disadvantaged individuals so that they can learn to read and write, or even gain important employability skills. This, as a result, will potentially offer them the opportunity to secure better-paid jobs and enhance their living quality. Furthermore, the governments should mobilize humanitarian resources to examine factories and workplaces, especially those located in remote or minoritized areas, to ensure that no workers receive severe mistreatment. By doing this, labor exploitation can be eliminated.

In conclusion, the prevalence of illiteracy can give rise to various dire consequences, including rising poverty and labor abuse. Nevertheless, I believe that should the government make rudimentary education universally accessible and protect workers’ basic human rights, these problems can be solved comprehensively.
