The illustration depicts the information on a hot-air balloon in terms of its parts and workings.
Overall, a hot air balloon has three main parts: an envelope, a passenger basket and a burner. It operates on the basis that hot air rises to the top and cool airs flows to the bottom.
The envelope is constructed with gores and panels, made up of textile materials. At the top, it has a large hole, which is sealed by a flap, called a parachute valve. A skirt is connected to the mouth of the envelope. The basket is attached to the skirt through ropes and holds the burner with propane cylinders. To ascend the balloon, the burner ignites the propane-air mixture, producing a flame to heat the air inside the envelope. The air becomes less and less dense, expanding the balloon and also flowing it into the atmosphere. As for descending it, the burner is turned off and so the air cools down. The balloon then gradually loses its buoyance. In addition, the parachute valve is opened, making the hot air escape from the envelope and fastening the dropping of the balloon.
