The chart illustrates data about how many people from 25 to 34 years old rented or had their own house between 2004 and 2014 in the United States.

Overall, it is clear that in almost all the years, the percentage of people who had a house is higher than that of the renters. However, it witnessed a downward trend while the figure for renting increased rapidly.

In 2004, the proportion of homeowners stayed at the peak with roughly 60%. After that, even though this figure has two slight recoveries in 2007 and 2012 at around 55% and 43% respectively, it dropped continually. At the end of the period, under 40% of people in the USA were householders.

Although in the first year shown, the percentage of the tenants was much lower than that of the homeowners by nearly 40%, it rose dramatically to 42% in 2012. In the following year, the rental rate with 44% took over the figure for the house owners and reached a peak of about 37% in the last year.
