Many people believe that travelling or working abroad is the only reason to learn a foreign language. Others may say that there are different reasons to study a new language. This essay will shed light on both views and present my own position.
To begin with, it is reasonable that some people only start to learn a foreign language when they have to travel or work in that country. In particular, in order to achieve the working proficiency of a specific language takes a long period of time and efforts. Therefore, a lot of people only learn a new language other than their mother tongue if they are required to travel or work in a foreign country. For example, an English speaker may find it much easier for his work in China if he is able to use Mandarin in daily activities.
However, I agree that studying a new language is not only useful when we are in a foreign country but also in career as well. As the world is changing rapidly and every city is becoming a metropolitan city with people coming from every corner of the globe, knowing a foreign language is the key to open the door of great opportunities in the job market. For instance, many Japanese government is starting to invest in Southeast Asia which leads to the fact that in many nations, Japanese speakers will stand a higher chance of being employed than someone who does not know how to speak Japanese.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that not until when we are in other country should we learn a new language. It is of great importance for us to be well-prepared for the global workforce by learning a new language, especially in such a competitive job market nowadays.
