US Crime Statistics: A General Increase
Between 1974 and 1993, statistics from the FBI described a striking evolution of trends and patterns in murder, the number of prisoners, crime rate, public opinion, and the regularity of various crimes.
Figures showed, for example, that one criminal offense happened every 2 seconds. In this category, one violent crime was committed every 48 seconds, compared with one property crime taking place 20 times a minute.
In 1974, violent crimes accounted for 470 cases per 100,000 people. After some erratic movements, these rates started rising again to the level of 750 per 100,000 people in 1993.
Among a population of 100,000, 4500 property crimes were committed in 1974. After a 0.3 % drop between 1975 and 1977, this number quickly rocketed to 5400 in 1980. Then, it significantly declined by 1000 property crimes, but between 1985 and 1991, figures slowly grew.
Furthermore, the rate of murders involving family members fell by 5 % between 1965 and 1970. In the early seventies, things seemed to be levelling off. From 1975 on, a sharp decrease could be reported, except for a rise between 1980 and 1985.
In 1965, the average age of people arrested for murder was about 33 years. In the following years, these figures seemed to gradually decline until 1980, when there was a small rise, but in 1985 statistics started to plummet again.
The sex of murder victims, however, was male in more than 75% of the cases. And what is more: more black people (50%) were involved than white counterparts (45 %).
Mostly, murderers seemed to use handguns (60%) . Another 20% used knives and the remaining 20% of murders were committed with other weapons like blunt objects, or simply by beating the victim. According to poll results, 89 % of the population believed that the crime problem in the US was getting worse. In addition, being a victim of crime was seen as something to personally worry about by 55 %.
These statistical results seemed to prove that, in general, crime was worsening in the US.
