Please help me with this sentence

Mr and Mrs Dursley, of number 4, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much.

What is the point of saying "thank you very much"? I don't understand who is thanking whom? I don't understand why is it necessary to say "thank you very much" here.

Please help me with explanation.
