Please help me with this sentence?

Can you say PROMINENT PART OF ME like this or TAKE AHOLD OF ME?
How would you say this sentence please?

- I knew I had had premonitions but it had never happened to me while I was wide awake. Maybe as I got older, the “thing” became a more prominent part of me” Maybe as I got older it would take ahold of me.

Thank you

To answer your question: Yes, you can say "a prominent part of me" and "take ahold of me" as you wrote. I would say your passage this way, "I knew I had had premonitions but they had never happened to me while I was wide awake. Maybe as I got older, the "thing" would become a more prominent part of me .
