please help me with this phrase "the human side of the equation"

It is not easy for me to make a thorough understanding of the word "equation" here. I don't think it means "A statement asserting the equality of two expressions, usually written as a linear array of symbols that are separated into left and right sides and joined by an equal sign." as found in the dictionary. But what does it really mean here? Please help me with it. Thank you!
