With advancing technology, the development of automated vehicles is becoming a reality. In your opinion, what are the advantages and disadvantages of self-driving vehicles?

It is a well-known fact that future mobility landscape will be solely dominated by unmanned means of transport. Despite some obvious benefits associated with this trend, it is not without flaws.

On the one hand, there are two primary advantages to the recent switch towards automatic transportations. First, the rise of full self-driving means that traffic-related deaths caused by human error could be significantly reduced. There will be a lower incident of miscalculations, drunk driving, text driving or dozing off behind the wheel when the automated system does the driving, resulting in fewer tragic collisions. Second, the time commuters would otherwise spend maneuvering the car could be freed for other purposes. For instance, there would be spare time for people to entertain themselves or do extra work on their way to the company.

On the other hand, the drawbacks of the rise of driverless vehicles cannot be denied. With the advent of self-steering transportations, human drivers working in the ride-sharing industry will lose their jobs to their computer-controlled counterparts. Once this scenario plays out, the unemployment rates will inevitably grow. Furthermore, these automatically driven vehicles may be incapable of dealing with treacherous weather conditions, difficult terrains or unexpected road situations such as potholes. This weak point could lead to some annoying repercussions such as late for work or being stuck.

To conclude, although the spread of fully autonomous means of transport has produced a number of favourable outcomes, there exist several limitations. However, the shift away from human-driven transportations is almost inevitable, given the fast-paced development of autonomous vehicles.
