The given chart illustrates the percentage of families who owned or rented their accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 and 2011. Overall, it is clearly evident from the graph that there was an upward trend in the percentage of households in owned accommodation while a reciprocal decline was experienced in the rentals. Throughout the time frame, renting accommodation was more favorable than owning one.
In the first year of the time period, the percentage of households in rented accommodation stood at 76% which was more than triple the percentage of households in owned accommodation. From that point, the percentage of rentals decreased significantly to 50% in 1971 after witnessing a remain unchanged at 69% between 1939 and 1953. The reverse was true for the percentage of ownership when it increased considerably from 22% to 50% in the same period of time.
In 1971, the data of rentals and ownership were becoming even at 50%. Rentals continuously declined and hit a low at 31% in 2001. During the next ten years, it gradually climbed to 36%. In this latter time period, the percentage of households in owned accommodation overtook rentals by a wide margin since it rose substantially between 50% to 68% and reach a peak at 69% in 1991 and 2001 respectively. After that, it slowly dipped to 65% in 2011.
