Topic: People today know fewer of their neighbors than in the past. Why is this? What can be done to solve the problem?

It is true that quality time amongst neighbors is on the decline, irrespective of different corners of the world. Surprisingly, hardly do people know the identities of the ones who live next-door them. This trend is driven by a host of factors and some viable solutions can be implemented to enhance the sense of brotherhood between them.

There are two compelling reasons for this reality. First of all, the fact that technological dominance over mankind’s daily life is noticeable. As the world revolves around technical devices, either their job tasks or leisure activities are technologically reliant. Take people working from nine-to-five as an instance, they handle a range of emails on laptops at their workplaces then binge-watch Netflix series on phones to get rid of stress. Gradually, people get accustomed to entertaining themselves with a variety of applications and websites available on their compact gadgets instead of having face-to-face interactions with their neighbors. This problem could be addressed by organizing community events that stimulate friendliness amongst local residents such as year-end parties or sports championships. In addition, the government should allot the budget to build new public facilities like children's playgrounds or parks, where people could mix with each other.

Secondly, the rising crime attributes to individuals being extremely cautious and skeptical of each other. Since crime rates have rocketed in plenty of areas, especially in bustling metropolises, fear of crimes is also on the increase. This fear is fueled on an hourly basis with highlighted headlines on newspaper front pages. As a result, people find it better to isolate themselves from the rest of the neighborhood thus protecting themselves and their families from being victims. To solve this problem, stories about kindhearted people help out the others should receive more media coverage, instead of crime-related articles.

To sum up, the poor relationship between neighbors may be attributed to various factors and the aforementioned solutions can hopefully reverse the trend.
