Please help me with these

Hi. Please help me with these sentences.

1. Do you think what follows the word "better" and the comma is correct? I feel what comes after them relates back to the main clause. (I am not sure I phrased correctly to reflect what I wanted to say, though.) Should we use another dash instead of a comma?

They ate this food on this day -- to feel better, as they believed it was best to eat this food to fight off cold.

2. Do you think the pronoun (I think it is that) is optional here. I thought if you had a noun that precedes another noun, then the pronoun "that" would be optional, but here, I believe the word "good" is an adjective. Help.

The food was very good (that?) we had to have a second.

3. Assuming that we are talking about a type of food that could be prepared easily and tasty, and it is something that people in a nation haven't been familiar with. Could a person make this side comment? Please note the word "dinners" in plural.

(Sounds like a good idea for school dinners.)

4. Is the definite article "the" belfore the word "Chinese" correct? Please tell me why it would be correct. Let us assume the letters "XXX" represent the name of a certain plant.

This food is so effective in stimulating digestion as it contains XXX and the Chinese plant.

5. Is this correct? I think this might be a similar pattern to the one below (not sure, though): Please come eat with us.

This will help achieve his goal.
