Please help me with one sentence...

Hi guys,

Can you please help me with one sentence? Because I can't move with it...:-(((.

Context:

Two guys are standing on the beach in the Africa. One of these guys just decided to go fishing. Because as he said, catching of the fish would return him back some of his mojo, because he's tired from the fishes cooking. So he wants to catch one alive. That second guy is a pro "game fisherman" and he wants to help him...He said:

I’m going to try and put him into a fish(does this really mean, I wanna help him with the fish catching???) because he’s been in Mozambique for 3 weeks and the closest he’s got is about 3ft away from the boat and apparently it fell off (????...that "it" probably means his attitude to fishing...But I have a problem with whole meaning of that last part).

when he said "3 feet away from the boat", he showed that distance with his hands.

thank you in advance for your help!

Best Regards

Hi, JCD, I think it's much less figurative than you expect. The language seems to be a little special, or uncommon. He's been here for three weeks and the closest he's got is about 3ft away from the boat and apparently it fell off The fish was three feet from the boat and fell off the line.

  • " This is the guide's job, right?
  • Or he's doing it as a friend, or as a nice guy?

Hi Avangi,
many many thanks for the answer, but what does it mean "The fish was three feet from the boat and fell off the line" ? Please, how did you mean it?
" I take 3ft from the boat as the "guide's" way of expressing the degree of closeness, not the position of the fish (although they amount to the same thing - it's a matter of perspective) "
So you mean

Hi Avangi again,

"fell off then line", by "line" you probably mean "fishing line"...right?
Now I think that guy is saying "Closest he's come to catching a fish was during our boat trip to .... but that fish apparently fell of the fishing line, because he didn't say that he caught something.....
Please confirm my idea...:-)

Exactly so, JCD. Although I fished as a child, I've never understood the adult hunting and fishing mentality. I'm offended by the idea of making a trophy of a living thing. Now with Moby ****, where the whale wins, that I like.

I picture your character as seeking a confrontational relationship with a fish, but in an extremely naive way. Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

Okay, thank you Avangi.
Have a nice weekend.
