Between March 1993 and March 1996, the proportion of unemployed people in the US decreased considerably from 7% to 5.5% despite some oscillations. During the next three-year period, this figure remained relatively stable at 5.0% till the end of the period.
During the first period of two years, the percentage of people without jobs in Japan rose from only 2.5% in 1993 to over 3.5% in 1994, reaching a plateau till the end of 1995. One year later, there was a sharp increase in the proportion of the unemployed in Japan, with the figure reaching 4.5% in 1996. In the last two years, this figure hit the peak at just over 5% before declined negligibly and became equivalent to that of the US at the end of the period in question.
