The graphs illustrate how the use of electrical appliances changed and how much time was spent doing housework such as washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that while the figure for houseworks by using refrigerator and vacuum cleaner was significantly increased, the opposite was true for the amount of time in a household per week.
According to the diagram, refrigerator’s use started at 0% in 1920, then it witnessed a noticeable growth to 100% in 2000 and remained unchanged until 2019. In addition, the proportion of households with vacuum cleaners stood at about 30%, higher than when compared with refrigerators. Every 20 years until 1960, a significant rise was seen in the use of vacuum cleaners, then it steadily rose and reached a peak at ultimately 100% in 1980. In contrast, washing machines started at the highest point, with over 40%, but gradually increased to 70% in 1960. Finally, it fell slightly and recovered to finish the period at just about 70%.
Moreover, the number of hours which was spent washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning stood at around 50% and then it fell steadily to 20% from 1920 to 1960. Finally, the decline was more gradual, reaching slightly over 10 hours in 2019.
