Task 2: Some people feel that young people should follow the traditions of their society. Others, however, believe that young people should be free to behave as individuals. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
HERE'S MY WRITING:
Numerous people believe that the youth should adopt their community’s traditions. While there are several reasons for the young to preserve their own traditions, I maintain that they should behave freely as themselves.
On the one hand, the idea of youngsters conforming to the norm is beneficial to some extent. This could preserve the identity of a community. Teenagers nowaday have a subtle mind that helps them promote cultural images in a variety of ways which are much faster and more efficient. Therefore, the long-held traditions of a country would be passed down through one generation to another. For example, Vietnamese young families still keep the custom of worshipping their ancestors. Therefore, they will learn to honor them for their contributions and respect their seniors.
On the other hand, in this world of integration, the young generations should be given freedom to express themselves. This would create a more open environment for teenagers to show their individuality, which is especially important in this era of globalisation. In addition, there are a lot of traditions and customs that are undoubtedly unethical. Thus, if they are preserved, they would create a bad image of one country. Take the water buffalo fight in Vietnam for example. It has been recognised as the country’s intangible cultural heritage in spite of many protests from local young citizens and the international public. Consequently, the nation’s reputation has been significantly affected.
In short, notwithstanding the advantages that young adults bring about when preserving traditional values, I believe that they should focus on themselves and feel free to express their individuality. In my opinion, depraved customs and traditions should be abolished to avoid their negative impacts instead of being adopted by youngsters.
