Task 2: In spite of the advances made in agriculture, many people around the world still go hungry. Why is this the case? What can be done about this problem?
It is true that there are still many hungry people worldwide despite the agricultural advances. There are a number of reasons behind this tendency, and several solutions should be adopted to alleviate the phenomenon.
There are two main reasons why a considerable part of the world still lives in hunger although there were advances in agriculture. One reason is that the existing advancements are impractical. Not all enhancement plans are eligible for the majority group of people. For instance, in spite of putting the Green Revolution into practice, most countries in Africa now still have to import their farm produce because of its ineffectiveness. Another contributing reason to the phenomenon is the population explosion. When the number of people in a country exceeds the amount of food it can afford, its inhabitants will go hungry. Take the slums in India for example, the growing population makes it impossible for the residents here to have enough food to eat although there used to be a revolution in agriculture.
However, there are several measures which can be done to solve the mentioned problems. The first one is that governments can use money from the other sectors to spend it in agriculture and the infrastructure of cutting-edge technologies which can improve the quality of cultivation. China is a typical example of this trend. The percentage of money spent on developing agriculture is remarkably high. Another feasible solution would be to raise people’s awareness of the value of agricultural products. From that, they can economize on the amount of food that is often wasted and end up in landfills, instead of being supplied to those in need.
In conclusion, there are various reasons for the fact that a lot of people go hungry although there have been improvements in agriculture, and actions need to be taken to tackle this problem.
